Yachties Information for Parents

learn to sail parentsYachties Learn to Sail program has been specifically designed for school going children.  This fun, games based, sailing program is delivered by Internationally qualified Instructors at Yachties recognised Sailing Centres.  All the equipment is provided and children don't need any previous sailing experience, or Yacht Club membersip to participate.

Yachties is delivered by World Sailing and South African Sailing certified sailing instructors to small groups of children.

Children will progress through three levels at Yachties

  • Yachties 1 - Fun Sailing
  • Yachties 2 - Tricks and Techniques
  • Yachties 3 - Sailing Fast

During Yachties 1 - Fun Sailing, kids learn to sail small boats together, it's a great way to meet other kids in the group and to make new friends.

In Yachties 2 - Tricks and Techniques, confident kids are encouraged to sail the small boats on their own, with lots of encouragement, supervision and support from the Yachties Instructors.

Yachties 3 - Sailing Fast is the final level, where kids are encouraged to sail on their own while playing games and learning to make the boat sail fast under the guidance and supervision of the Yachties Instructors.

Each Yachties level requires twenty hours of participation, typically this is eight two and a half hour sessions during the week, after school.   At the end of each Yachtie level, the kids recieve a certificate of achievement.

Occasionally, Yachties Instructors hold Yachties Camps, providing practise sessions over weekends and school holidays, where kids can get together to have fun and work on improve their sailing skills.

On completion of the Yachties Learn to Sail Program, kids can progress to the next phase, where they are exposed to more formal sail training with an introduction to yacht racing.
